 Luis I. Juncos, M.D.
Professor of Medicine,
National University of Córdoba
Director, J. Robert Cade Foundation
Córdoba, Argentina

Luis I. Juncos, M.D. is an Argentinian borne nephrologist who received the MD degree in 1963 from the National University of Cordoba, Argentina. Dr. Juncos’ post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology was carried out in the US, attaining numerous academic appointments in top Medical Centers including the Mayo Clinic (1971-1972) in Rochester, MN and both the Veterans Hospital and the Medical College of the University of Florida (1972-1978), in Gainesville, FL. Dr. Juncos’ professional accomplishments include Board certifications in the US in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. Dr. Juncos served in the United States Army as a major in the Mayor Medical Corp during 1967-1969.  In 1978 he returned to his native country to apply his professional knowledge and accomplishments to the teaching of medical students and the care of patients. He rose through the academic ranks of the Medical School in Cordoba, Argentina to achieve professorial status as Professor and Chair of Medicine in 1986. Additional appointments include Chief of Medical Services at the Catholic University, Cordoba, Argentina (2001-2003). Dr. Juncos’ research achievements are documented in 33 published books as either author or co-author and 75 original articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. The scientific contributions made by Dr. Juncos encompass both clinical and experimental studies focusing on the mechanisms of renal function in health and disease. Much of his work focused on the role of the renin angiotensin system and prostaglandins in human renal hypertension, the development of end stage renal disease (ESRD) and radiation nephritis and the mechanisms by which it causes hypertension. As a clinician scientist, Dr. Juncos’ studies on the role of lipids, anions, and nitric oxide in the kidney represent original basic-science contributions while additional publications including co-authorship of publications from large multi-national clinical trials, such as the RENAAL trial, attest to his successful efforts in translational medicine. Given his scientific standing, it is not surprising that Dr. Juncos has attained an international reputation as a speaker at both national and international meetings. Beyond and above what Dr. Juncos accomplished as a physician and educator at the Medical University of Cordoba, Argentina, he fulfilled his commitment to the IASH mission by being a co-founder of the Argentinian Society of Hypertension in 1994, attaining the Presidency of the Internal Medicine Society of Córdoba, Argentina in 1986, serving as Director of the Argentinian Society of Nephrology -Hypertension Council (1987-1990), and receiving honorary membership in the Venezuelan Society of Cardiology. Furthermore, Dr. Juncos’ efforts on behalf of the IASH span more than two decades, serving as a member of the IASH Board of Trustees beginning in 1993, acting as IASH secretary between 1997 and 2005, and being elected as President of the IASH for 2007-2009. Dr. Juncos is married to Norma Cherini Juncos and they share four children.  The exemplary achievements of Luis I. Juncos MD, as an educator, clinician scientist, and officer of IASH, more than merit the gratitude that our organization can bestow in terms of the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.
