Contribution of Obesity and Abdominal Fat Mass This study compared 379 stroke survivors to 758 people who had not had strokes to determine the connection between obesity and abdominal fat and stroke. The study assessed waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-stature ratio (WSR) and body mass index (BMI) to determine their relationship with stroke. The study found that measures of abdominal fat were all significantly associated with stroke risk, but that BMI, after controlling for physical inactivity, smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes, was not.
